Malchus and Tefillah: The World Speaking Back
If Torah is in one sense the movement from above to below, tefillah is the archetypal movement from below to above.
Hashem speaks.
The soul answers.
The Torah commands.
The human being responds.
The world receives existence.
Then somewhere inside that existence a mouth opens and says:
“Ribbono Shel Olam.”
This is why the Chavah Kadmonah framework calls prayer the feminine gate and describes it as the meeting of what is given from above with the voice rising from below.
In prayer, Malchus becomes conscious.
All day we receive.
We receive oxygen.
Light.
Food.
Thought.
Opportunity.
Memory.
Other people.
A body.
Time.
Existence itself.
Most reception occurs without awareness.
Tefillah gathers unconscious reception and returns it as conscious relation.
Thank You.
Help me.
Forgive me.
Heal us.
Bless us.
Gather us.
Restore justice.
Rebuild Jerusalem.
Bring redemption.
The movement is upward, but its content is everything we have encountered below.
This is or chozer in existential form.
The world does not return empty-handed.
It returns carrying its hunger.
Its gratitude.
Its confusion.
Its brokenness.
Its longing.
Its particularity.
The Infinite gave existence.
Malchus sends back a human voice.
